Mt Theo Outstation

In 1994, as a community response to crisis levels of sniffing in Yuendumu, Mt Theo Outstation was opened. The Outstation provides a safe place for petrol sniffers, out of reach of petrol, to undergo cultural counselling and training by traditional owners and elders.
Mt Theo Program has been successfully addressing petrol sniffing in Yuendumu for over 12 years, based on a strong network of relationships that involve every community organization and family group in Yuendumu. The founder of the Program, elder Peggy Brown, still cares for young clients at Mt Theo Outstation. Senior Traditional Owner and Program founder, Johnny Miller, continues to work as Outstation Manager.
Despite the early years, when Mt Theo attracted no external funding, the Outstation has always continued to function when petrol sniffers needed care. Furthermore, Mt Theo has maintained an unblemished financial record, with no litigation or liquidation proceedings against the organization, and no outstanding tax liabilities.

Increasingly, and as the strength of the Mt Theo process is acknowledged, young people are being referred to Mt Theo by police and magistrates as an alternative to formal charges, as a bail condition or supervised parole.
Above all, what we do is keep the founder’s dream alive - provide solid and cultural opportunities for confused and sick young people to turn their lives around.
